Specialised Tax Agent: An effective contribution to encourage self-compliance

Monday, December 25,2023

Under the leadership of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, and the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, Ruler of Dubai, the United Arab Emirates has laid the foundations for a comprehensive national development approach that calls for enhancing integration as a means to implement the government's visions, anticipate future trends that require the deployment of advanced technologies to accelerate achievements, and set priorities by designing transformational projects that have a direct impact on the community and help advance the UAE's global position.

The Federal Tax Authority (FTA) contributed to the government's efforts to design and launch rapid and major transformational projects that drive substantial leaps forward in the national economy.

The Specialised Tax Agent service is one of the key projects launched to that end by the FTA in 2023. The initiative provided a flexible, clear, and precise online procedure that allows the Authority's customers to choose the Specialised Tax Agent most suitable for their respective sector or taxable economic activity. Agents can be selected from a list that includes ten diverse sectors, where authorised Tax Agents registered with the FTA are classified under these sectors based on their cumulative practical experiences.

Indicators reveal that there has been an increase of over 15% in requests from registered taxpayers to connect online with accredited Tax Agents during the initial months of implementing the service, compared to the previous period. Moreover, the number of visitors to the Specialised Tax Agents Register on the FTA website rose to nearly 70,000 visits in the first half of 2023, compared to just 6,700 in all of 2022. The number of Tax Agents subscribed to the Specialised Tax Agents Register exceeded 70% of the total number of agents registered with the Authority.

The service can be easily accessed by logging into the Tax Agent Register on the FTA website, then 'Filtering' Agents by previous experience or specialty sector, and choosing one of the listed agents in the desired sector.

Tax Agents registered with the Federal Tax Authority are classified under various sectors, including businesses subject to Value Added Tax (VAT), tax refund for UAE citizens on building new residences, tax refunds for mosques, and small and medium-sized enterprises (Muwafaq Package). These categories are the most prominent on the list, which also includes specialisations in government entities and charitable organisations, non-resident (foreign) businesses, property owners, Excise Tax registration, registration of Warehouse Keepers and Designated Zones, Excise Goods registration, and Corporate Tax.

These indicators confirm that the Specialised Tax Agent service succeeded in achieving many of its objectives in a short period of time, and we expect these positive results to continue, which serves to provide an operational environment that encourages self-compliance with tax obligations, in line with the FTA's strategy to contribute to government efforts, help boost the UAE's competitiveness, and sustainably upgrade government services
